None of the casualties from Southampton were brought home to be buried here. If the bodies were recovered at all, they were either buried at sea, or taken to Halifax, Nova Scotia and buried there in the Fairview Lawn Cemetery.

There are however 38 gravestones in Southampton Old Cemetery that bear inscriptions referring to crew members - or in one case a passenger - who died in the disaster.  Each of these graves is marked with a blue peg, placed there by Friends of Southampton Old Cemetery.

This section investigates the family connections that led to these particular family graves being chosen to have memorial inscriptions

All these burials were of children, the first 4 being probably his siblimgs, and were long before the Titanic sinking. The first in 1883 makes this the oldest grave with a Titanic inscription.

Known as ‘Cissie’. The first burial was of her husband James who died the year before the Titanic sinking. Their son Frederick followed in 1929. This stone was erected by Frederick’s shipmates on the ‘Majestic’, which is presumably (in 1929) when the Titanic inscription was added.

The first burial was of a baby sister 27 years before. His father died the year before the Titanic sinking, and his mother 17 years after.

Gladys was his daughter, born in the same quarter as the sinking.
